Podcast Profile – J. Lang

jlang

Self described in his own words:

“Producer, Dj and all day music freak.- Old ass DJ-. Cant get enough of a good beat. -Djing for 30 yrs.- There is no instrument like the human voice. I love all kinds of music but i do have my favorites (hip-hop, r&b, Jazz, rock). In my ipod-Aerosmith to Vandross.”

J. Lang is one of ccmixter’s finest human resources and I’m happy to call him my friend although we’ve never actually met. I wanted to shine a little spotlight on him in the hope that others may find his music enlightening and his services worthy if you’re in need of a producer.

You can check out the podcast here. It’s about a half hour long and the file is about 37mb to download. It includes 5 tracks by J. Lang and a short 5 minute interview between us. Check it out!

Podcast Profile – Murat Ses

murat_cover_med

I was recently asked to put together a short retrospective podcast of Murat Ses, a legendary Turkish composer and music producer, and one of the sound architects of modern Eurasian folk music. He’s been making some pretty interesting music since the 70′s and has been internationally recognized for his efforts.

The intro to this podcast is excerpted from “Binfen 2″ by Murat Ses.

Music Track List:

    Electro Levantine
    Drift 2
    Groove Anatolia
    Thru The Valley
    Eau Gallie
    Tamiami Trail

Download the podcast here. (mp3 format, file size is about 41mb)

Total play time is about 29 minutes.

I really enjoyed exploring his music and putting this together. I’m considering doing more of these “podcast profile” kinds of things, perhaps even splicing in interviews with the artists. Still feeling out the idea, but I’d like to keep the format to probably 4-5 artist tracks, 2 talkovers by me, and keep it to about a half hour. I guess if I did an “interview”, it would be 4 tracks, 2 talkies, and an interview. I like the idea of what I’d call “pocket podcats”, or what I use as my barometer… a trip on San Francisco Muni from the Panhandle to Downtown (my old commute). Something someone could put on their ipod and listen to on the way to work. Thoughts?

so check out the music of Murat Ses!

      Peace of Winter

I feel really fortunate to have a new track on the brand new Net release from Artis Tech Media (ATM) and ccmixter.org. The release, “Peace of Winter” features new and traditional holiday music, with a large portion of the proceeds going to the Dalai Lama Foundation. The project is the brainchild of Emily Richards aka “Snowflake“, an incredibly gifted songwriter and musician, who also happens to run ATM.

I had the pleasure of working with Frank H. Carter III. who does the main vocal work. I played and sang everything else and produced it.

Probably 20 years ago, before I knew how to play guitar but wanted to, I was interested in alot of folk songs, mostly from listening to stuff like Led Zeppelin doing songs like “Gallows Pole” and “When the Levee Breaks”. I always wanted to play “Amazing Grace”, and it might have taken me 15 years to sit down and actually record it, I guess I was waiting for someone like Frank to come along and really inspire me.

      Get it from iTunes

      Get it from Jamendo

      The Kitchen SinQ

I’ve got a fairly recent remix I put together up over on Remixfight! which features the sounds of SinQ, a very cool multi-instrumentalist. It also includes source material from Lamone, Morusque, and CiggiBurns from ccmixter. Check out all the latest remixes over there and vote for your favorite!

      Winter Sunlight (featuring Leza2unes)

Just wrapped up another new mix for Snowflake’s Music for Tibet project. This one features vocals by Leza2unes, and I again kept it pretty simple, with a simple beat, bass, and a few guitars.

Amazing Grace (featuring Frank H. Carter III)

Songboy3 aka Frank H. Carter III is one of the finest vocalists at ccmixter.org. His vocal tracks are both inspiring and excellent, and to have access to them and be able to create new musical works with them is a real treat.

I’d been wanting to do something with this for some time, and had no excuses yesterday as I was recording the latest Cool Music show. For this, I recorded 2 tracks of 1-take live beater Sigma guitar, a DI track with my P-Bass, and a whole bunch of hummin backing harmony vocal tracks. With the song itself being such a classic traditional piece, and with Frank’s beautiful interpretation, I didn’t really want to clutter it up with too much, or detract from his vocal track.

      Big Guardian Angel

New remix I posted recently featuring the wonderful vocals of Jacinda Espinosa. Actually, it’s more like I worked up a simple acoustic arrangement based on her vocal track. I made some minor changes, like where the bridge comes in, but i more or less kept it intact. Recorded with my beater Sigma acoustic into a large diaphragm condenser, as well as with a P-bass direct in to an MBox/ProTools.

      The Secret Mixter

Just wrapped up a couple new remixes for the “Secret Mixter” project over on ccmixter.

“The Orchestral Movements of 1932″ features Jackson Torreal, Calling Sister Midnight, and MiElle of the BO Crew. It tells a story. You can read more about it from the download link below.

In addition, Loveshadow performed the daunting and most admirable task of slicing up a ton of my Cool Music voiceovers and turning me into a beat poet with “Things I Love Things I Hate”.

      2 more recent remixes

A flurry of activity lately! In addition to the recent “If I Wait” remix, I did a couple other remixes over on ccmixter.

“The Love Connection” features Loveshadow and Jhon Black. Lots of bounce per ounce on this one.

Ciggiburns is a dynamite english singer and one of ccmixter’s best kept secrets. My nickname for her is “the voice”. I know, it’s unoriginal but it’s the first thing I think when I hear her sing. She also does great radio promos. I’ve been wanting to remix her for some time, so I took CiggiBurn’s vocals into the far depths of MIDI space with “Small Back Room – The Space Station mix”.

      If I Wait

Just wrapped up a new song/remix which I really like. The vocals are by Sunbyrn, and I do the rest. The drums are looped, but all the rest is me playing live.
